2021 Concours d’Lemons Michigan – Pics and Winners

Posted July 27, 2021

Thunderstorms of near biblical proportions forced the 2021 Concours d’Lemons off the sodden fairways of the Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth, MI and into parking lot behind the hotel, next to the dumpsters, where it really belonged. Crap cans from all over the midwest braved the damp weather and shared their hoopties with the appreciative spectators. The celebrity judges accepted bribes ranging from gas station sourced hors d’eouvres to the finest of Wisconsin Bourbon. Once the judges sobered up, and the results were tabulated, a flim-flam awards ceremony distributed dollar store sourced trophies to the winners. Sponsor eBayMotors provided $100 gift cards to class winners and a $200 gift card to Scott Dolmage of Berkley, MI for his “Worst of Show” winning 1989 Pontiac 6000 STE AWD. The AWD Pontiac is one of only 2000 or so made, one of 10 or so left in the world and is the nicest one in existence.

The event crew from Hagerty deserve a standing ovation for moving the show on a moment’s notice and making it all possible. As always, the Concours d’Lemons events are inexplicably brought to you by Hagerty, eBayMotors, Griots Garage and Classic Motorsports Magazine

Lemons Rally NorthWrecks 2021 – Pics and Winners

Posted June 21, 2021

The inaugural Pacific NorthWrecks Lemons Rally sputtered and smoked its way across Washington and Oregon June 11-13, 2021. Participants in vehicles ill-suited to the nearly thousand-mile, three-day rally set off from Griot’s Garage Headquarters in Tacoma, WA, hoping to accumulate points by finding unique and humorous checkpoints outlined in a hastily prepared route book. Rally teams with the least suitable vehicles earned extra points before setting out around the Olympic Peninsula, over the Cascades beyond cellular service range to the wilds of the eastern Washington town of Walla Walla Wall and finally ending in Portland, Oregon by following the Columbia River westward.

Rally stops included a never completed then abandoned nuclear power plant, a gas station shaped like teapot and a replica of Stonehenge overlooking the Columbia River. Teams were encouraged to find their own interesting checkpoints along the way and help other teams should they break down. Despite the assistance efforts of fellow rally participants, mechanical failures ended the trip for several teams, while others towed their broken hoopties home and retrieved even worse cars to complete the rally. When Team Dutch Carriage’s 1976 Volvo 66 (a badge engineered, belt driven Dutch DAF) threw its drive belt, team leader Mike Herrel retrieved his Austin Allegro and continued finding checkpoints, eventually topping the scoring sheet, and taking home first place on points. Team Space.Shilttle’s space shuttle themed 1997 Land Rover Discovery engine gave out in the middle of day two, so they towed it home, and set to work making their Chevy one ton pick-up look like the space shuttle Atlantis before driving all night to find an extra distant bonus check point only to find they would have finished third in points no matter what they did. This earned them the much coveted “Random Acts of Stupidity” rally award. A complete list of winners can be found below.

The Lemons Rally is a series of hastily planned and loosely organized rallies where participants drive cars ill-suited for the task to heck and back looking for humorous checkpoints. Concours d’Lemons NorthWorst 2021 – Winners and Photos

Posted June 16, 2021

The inaugural Concours d’Lemons NorthWorst took place on June 12, 2021, at Griot’s Garage Headquarters in Tacoma, WA to the delight of hooptie fans all over the NorthWest. RattletTraps and RustBuckets gleamed in the rare northwest sunshine as a large crowd of bewildered spectators enjoyed stunning weather, great stories from the car’s owners and laughs and smiles for everyone. The Lemons Rally, a rally for those not content with a static display of their Crap Can, sputtered and smoked their way into the show for a short stint before setting off on a wild goose chase beyond cellular service range in the wilds of eastern Washington.

Capricious celebrity judges accepted bribes before handing out dollar store sourced trophies in categories like “Rust Belt American Junk”, “Needlessly Complex Italian”, and the coveted top prize “Worst of Show”. The spectators laughed along with self-proclaimed Concours d’Lemons Head Gasket, Alan Galbraith during the awards ceremony. “We knew there are some terrible cars in the NorthWest, but we had no idea they would be this bad,” wondered Galbraith. “Fortunately, Griot’s Garage has car care products that can help even these wrecks,” Galbraith mused while presenting homemade plaques to class winners and a Gritot’s Garage car care product assortment to Steve Walker of Shoreline, WA and his “Worst of Show” winning 1948 Diamond T Boat Tail Speedster. “It used to be a chevy van before I started modifying it so people would stop asking me to help them move,” proudly stated Walker who then mused, “perhaps I got carried away.”

The Concours d’Lemons celebrates the oddball, mundane and truly awful of the automotive world at five major events in the United States and one in Australia. Concours d’Lemons Florida 2021 – Photos and Video

Posted June 2, 2021

The Concours d’Lemons returned to ruin the Amelia Island Concours weekend on May 22, 2021 at Main Beach Park in Fernandina Beach, Florida. A lighthearted spoof on high end concours, the Concours d’Lemons features the oddball, mundane and truly awful of the automotive world. Hoopties from all over the southeast rattled or were pushed into the beautiful beach-side park to the delight of the record crowd and the capricious, bribery prone celebrity judges.

Hagerty collector car insurance and Griot’s Garage car care products were on hand to assure owners that they had products that would benefit even the worst automobile on display. “Hagerty offers Roadside Assistance towing plans, and if your car is in this show, you are going to need all the roadside assistance you can get!” quipped Alan Galbraith, organizer and self-proclaimed “Head Gasket” of the Concours d’Lemons. Galbraith then joked to the crowd,  “Griot’s polishes and waxes can make your paint shine, but your car will still be ugly.”

The automotive industry celebrity judges laughed and joked with the cars owners before the loosely organized awards ceremony presented the winners with homemade trophies in hilariously named categories. “Worst of Show” honors went to Oliver and Terry Holler and their 1982 DeLorean “Back to the Future” time machine replica. The couple have driven their faithful replica of the movie car 827,000 miles over the past 20 years, all the while raising money for the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. To date they have raised $800,000, nearly a dollar per mile driven for the charity. After telling the story behind the car and the foundation during the awards ceremony, another $2000 was donated by Concours d’Lemons attendees.  “We are well on our way to $1 million,” beamed Terry while she accepted the tongue in cheek trophy. “This is the kind of car we like to see at a Concours d’Lemons,” Galbraith announced over the P.A., “Owners that have fun with their car, do some good in the world and share their enthusiasm with everyone they meet. A well-deserved ‘Worst of Show’ winner!”
