The Concours d’Lemons returned the beach at Main beach Park on March 1, 2024, as part of Classic Motorsports Magazine Amelia Kick-Off party.
The event included a sports car show, celebrity panel discussion and the Concours d’Lemons. The pouring rain did not deter hooptie owners or spectators from showing up and having a great time despite the wet weather. The national Pinto Owners Club made the event one of their regional meets, ironically named a “Pinto Stampede”, and showed up in force. A dozen Pinto’s graced the beach after a rally drive to the show. The entire club was awarded “Participation” plaques to honor their cars and fun spirit they brought to the show. “Worst of Show” honors went to Jeff Bodine and his 1977 Boonie Bug. The homebuilt Boonie Bug was offered as a set of plans in the back of Popular Mechanics for years. While many bought the plans, it is thought that only 4 or 5 boonie bugs were actually built from the supplied hardware store parts list. Comprised mostly of plywood and fiberglass the Boonie body sits on a VW chassis. Of the few built, there are only two that are road worthy. Jeff’s boonie bug is painted in chalkboard paint and he brought lots of street chalk and encouraged everyone to add their own art to his rare Bug. For displaying such an extremely rare vehicle with a great attitude the judges bestowed top honors.
The Concours d’Lemons is inexplicably sponsored by these otherwise respectable companies:
